Oh my god why does no one understand this? Sherlock is not a gay postive show

zoedangerawesome:

SHERLOCK IS NOT A GAY POSITIVE SHOW

SHERLOCK IS NOT A GAY POSITIVE SHOW

SHERLOCK IS NOT A GAY POSITIVE SHOW

The closest thing in Sherlock to queer representation was Irene Alder who said she was gay and then fell in love with Sherlock. (make of that what you will.)

The whole show is about two heterosexual men. And one of those men, Watson, spends about half an hour each episode telling everyone ever that he and Sherlock are not a couple.

That is not gay representation.

I repeat: that is not gay representation.

And fuck you if you think that is representation.

A show having a large slash fandom does not count as representation.

I’m sure there a many legitimate criticisms of Elementary, but accusing the show of being homophobic because Watson is played a women is not one of them.

I cannot say this enough times: Sherlock is not a gay positive show.

Sherlock is not a progressive show in terms of representation. It is about two white cis heterosexual men solving crimes.

The fact that Elementary has a women of color as a main character pretty much already makes it more progressive than Sherlock.

And furthermore if you watch Elementary you are under no obligation to ship Sherlock/Watson. I’m sure that there will be at least one other dude you can find.

And listen, Sherlock is a good show and Elementary existing  is not gonna change that. You are under no obligation to watch it. You are under no obligation to even acknowledge it.

Wasn’t really happy with the other lady Sherlock/Watson pictures I did, hopefully these are more coherent designs!

Sherlock is a retro, chic bitch, and John has more ski lodge sweaters than the entire country of Sweden.

Tumblr, why won’t you post this right? I give up.

Full version!

Brilliant

Genius.

Very, very hee. And look at Irene Adler with her bag, that rogue!

I am entirely aware that the take-home message here is not I LOVE THE WAY SHERLOCK’S HAIR IS DRAWN. And so: yes, all of this accurately sums up what super frustrates me about Sherlock, and also accurately sums up many of the reasons I love the original canon.

But also Sherlock’s hair is awesome.

Yes, this.

Why I am never seeing the BBC version ever beyond the ten minutes I tried.

So there’s been posts about Irene Adler coming across my dash

And I just saw the Sherlock movie and I was pretty pissed they killed her off with CLASSIC fridging- and apparently she is *owned* in the BBC episode too.

So I went and read “A Scandal in Bohemia”

and holy shit, not only does the woman completely own Sherlock Holmes (she turns his own trick against him and FOLLOWS HIM IN DISGUISE) and get off scot-free, she wasn’t a criminal at all, just a lady with a grudge who decided to let it go. And she had a husband and didn’t really care at all about Holmes. Her morals are held ABOVE Holmes’s client. Holmes keeps her picture because he’s IMPRESSED with her. The story ends with Watson saying “so yeah Holmes doesn’t joke about the cleverness of women anymore”.

So she’s like, turned into this Catwoman-ripoff who Holmes must save and triumph over and then exist to be fridged? And it’s continued in the BBC thing with her mooning after him?

It is really. really. sad when a story from eighteen-fucking-ninety-one allows a woman to be awesome and smarter than everyone but modern media can’t have that. WE’VE COME A LONG WAY.

THIS IS ALL MY PROBLEMS WITH THE BBC VS. THE CANON VERSION.

Like, I loved Irene as a character in the BBC version, as I said, but: seriously, if you haven’t read Scandal in Bohemia and may be confused as to why people are acting like she was ‘downgraded’ in the BBC version, please read it. It is just the snazziest execution of Holmes meeting his match and his match coming out on top I can imagine. Far better a point about Holmes being fallible than, ‘he almost lost, but then he pulled through!’, amirite?

IIRC, A Scandal in Bohemia goes like: Holmes thinks he’s an infallible super genius, that emotions make you ~foolish, and that women are creatures of pure emotion and therefore easy to manipulate! It looks like he’s got Irene Adler cornered and he’s feeling pretty smug about it as usual, but when he goes to have a dramatic confrontation, she’s gone! Because she totally figured him out and skipped town! And she left a QUITE FRANKLY DELIGHTFUL note to him saying “lol nice try but no”. And Holmes was like DANG >:| and went on to be presumably slightly less of a sexist jerk BECAUSE of the fact that a woman blatantly outwitted him???

That’s the point of the story! Holmes’ jerkitude is challenged by the fact that a lady showed him up! If you have an Irene Adler who tries but fails to outwit Sherlock and ends up needing him to save her… what is the point of that story? Why would they interpret the original story that way? It’s the complete opposite of the original, someone had to deliberately make that choice! WHAT ARE THEY TRYING TO SAY HERE.

looks like cumberbatch in a wig o<-<

personally with genderbends most of the time i prefer their designs to stay generally the same! so it gets awkward when the characters are irl male actors…. ben’s facial structure feels a bit feminine to me though idk

i am such a shameless shipper, i figure femlock wouldn’t bother with keeping up her physical appearance until femjohn comes into the picture and er, spruces things up a bit!! seriously did you notice sherlock looks healthier as time goes by
